CBSE – Class 10 Chemistry Syllabus

As per latest syllabus (2024–25):

  1. Chemical Reactions and Equations

    • Balanced chemical equations, types of reactions (combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, exothermic/endothermic), oxidation and reduction 

  2. Acids, Bases and Salts

    • pH concept, neutralization, properties and uses of sodium hydroxide, bleaching powder, baking soda, washing soda, plaster of Paris 

  3. Metals and Non-Metals

    • Physical & chemical properties, reactivity series, ionic compounds, metallurgical processes, corrosion prevention 

  4. Carbon and Its Compounds

    • Covalent bonding, homologous series, functional groups (halogens, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, alkanes, alkynes), saturated vs unsaturated hydrocarbons, reactions like combustion, oxidation, addition, substitution, plus ethanol, ethanoic acid, soaps, detergents

  5. Periodic Classification of Elements

    • Early classification attempts (Dobereiner, Newlands), Mendeleev’s periodic table, modern periodic table, periodic trends (valency, properties) 

Practical Component (Internal Assessment – 20 marks): 
Includes experiments like pH testing of solutions, reaction type demonstrations, reactivity series exercises, properties of acetic acid, soap cleaning efficiency tests.
